Operate as Skipper under Restricted Limits
Be qualified to command vessels up to 24 metres within 12 nautical miles of the New Zealand coast, carrying up to 19 passengers.

Demonstrate Core Maritime Safety & Navigation Skills
Apply knowledge in safety practices, emergency procedures, and accurate navigation using traditional and electronic systems.

Apply First Aid and Communication in Maritime Environments
Hold elementary first aid certification and Maritime Restricted Radio Operators Certificate.
What You're Signing Up For
This programme combines theoretical and practical training for individuals seeking employment or advancing careers as skippers in New Zealand's maritime sector. Graduates will be eligible for the Maritime New Zealand licence for skippers restricted to domestic waters, suitable for commercial workboats, water taxis, and small ferries. The flexible delivery includes online modules, practical sea-time, and on-campus block courses, ensuring learning is industry-relevant and workplace-connected.

- Electronic Navigation
- Vessel Machinery and Systems
- Safety and Compliance
- Maritime Restricted Radio Operators Certificate (MRROC)
- Completion of Seafarer Training Record Book
- Sea-time requirements (independently gained)
What you need to know first
40 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits
OR New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Crewing (Level 3)
OR a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 3 or recognised equivalent
Meeting Maritime New Zealand sea-time, medical, and eyesight requirements if pursuing MNZ licence
