What You're Signing Up For

The UCOL Academy 2 Day New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care is designed for secondary school learners interested in caring for animals and planning a career in animal care facilities such as pet stores, animal rescue centres, pet groomers, boarding and training facilities, or animal recreation businesses. This Level 3 programme covers animal welfare laws, normal and abnormal health and behaviour, anatomy, nutrition, health procedures, and practical day-to-day care of companion animals. Completion prepares learners for further study and entry into the animal care sector.

Course Content

  • Companion animal anatomy, cells, body tissues and systems (Unit Standard 5180)
  • Health and safety and hazard control in animal facilities (Unit Standard 5189)
  • Cat feeding, health, housing and routine health procedures (Unit Standard 31501)
  • Dog feeding, health, housing and routine health procedures (Unit Standard 31502)
  • Application of the Animal Welfare Act 1999 in animal facilities (Unit Standard 31504)

What you need to know first

For Year 12 - 13 secondary school learners (New Zealand Citizens, permanent residents, or students with an eligible visa for secondary school)

Must be aged 16 years or over

Applications must come from participating schools
