Understand ecological and biological principles
Describe and explain the geological and biological origins of Aotearoa New Zealand. Analyse conservation principles in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems within the New Zealand context.

Analyse conservation management approaches
Compare and critique different conservation philosophies; define conservation and sustainable development; explain the role of government and NGO organisations in New Zealand conservation.

Apply resource management and environmental law knowledge
Outline the history of environmental law in New Zealand, including current legislation and the impact of the Treaty of Waitangi on local and central government resource management.
What You're Signing Up For
The New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Level 4) – Environmental Management strand is ideal for those seeking a career shift into environmental or conservation work or thinking about further study in this area. Over 17 weeks (full-time option), students explore foundational ecology, conservation, marine and freshwater environments, environmental law, and career/study planning. Upon completion, students can pursue entry-level environmental roles or progress to higher-level qualifications such as the Bachelor of Environmental Management.

What you need to know first
At least 16 years old before course start
NCEA Level 2, or 60 credits at Level 2 or above, plus 20 credits from any level
10 credits in literacy at Level 1 or above, or equivalent
10 credits in numeracy at Level 1 or above, or equivalent
Special admission for those 20+ without entry criteria, at discretion of the institute
Evidence of English proficiency if first language is not English or te reo Māori
