What You're Signing Up For

The New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Pre-Trade (Level 3) at UCOL is a one-year program designed to provide learners with core electrical knowledge and basic practical skills relevant to work in entry-level electrical roles. The programme also supports development of literacy and numeracy skills related to the electrical industry. It prepares graduates to work under the supervision of licensed electrical workers and gain first aid certification, with potential pathways to further study or apprenticeship opportunities.

Course Content

  • Electrical Work Practices (15 credits): application of workplace standards, health and safety practices, first aid certification.
  • DC Fundamentals (15 credits): theory and principles of Direct Current circuits and systems.
  • AC Fundamentals (15 credits): theory and principles of magnetism, electromagnetism, AC theory, and safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Cables, Fittings, and Testing (15 credits): installing, testing, and fault-finding electrical cords, cables, and equipment.
  • Electricity Supply Systems (15 credits): understanding New Zealand's electricity supply system and user protection methods.
  • Protection, Plans and Circuits (15 credits): circuit protection, electrical drawing conventions, switching circuits, and lighting systems.
  • Electrical Installations (15 credits): cable and wiring systems and safe work practices in damp conditions.
  • Transformers, Electrical Machines, and Isolation (15 credits): operation theories and isolation procedures.
  • Capstone Assessment (1 credit): final closed-book exam to measure understanding and competency.

What you need to know first

NCEA Level 1 with Mathematics and English or equivalent academic achievement or work experience

International students require IELTS Level 5 or equivalent with no band lower than 5
