What You're Signing Up For

This certificate develops basic maritime knowledge and electro-technical skills for seagoing employment. Students are introduced to shipping operations, shipboard practice, and survival at sea, with advanced topics covering shipboard maintenance and repair, electrical safety, and operation of electrical systems and machinery. Graduates are prepared for careers in the maritime shipping industry as Deck Watch Ratings or with further training as electro-technical officers.

  • Basic fire fighting and fire prevention
  • Shipboard maintenance and repair procedures (electrotech)
  • Safe use of electrical equipment
  • Electrical maintenance and repair procedures
  • Monitoring and operation of shipboard electrical systems and machinery
  • Electrical and electronic measuring equipment, basic fault finding
  • Marine dangerous goods (optional)

What you need to know first

Open entry for domestic students: no academic requirements.

International students: IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5, or NZQA-approved equivalent.

All applicants must check Maritime New Zealand requirements for certification and medical fitness.
