What You're Signing Up For

The NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) at Future Skills Academy prepares students to work professionally with young children and families. This programme includes theoretical studies on child development, curriculum, health & safety, communication, and practical skills through placements in early childhood settings and home environments. Students learn about Te Whāriki - New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum - and develop an understanding of bi-cultural approaches incorporating Te Tiriti O Waitangi and Te Reo Māori. The course is designed for students aged 16 and above with academic and personal suitability requirements. Graduates are well-prepared for careers as early childhood educators, relievers, teacher aides, home-based care providers, and professional nannies. It also offers pathways to advanced qualifications including level 6 diplomas and teaching degrees at other institutions. The diploma is NZQA approved and recognised by New Zealand employers in the sector. A supportive learning environment with experienced educators and placement assistance is provided throughout the 36 weeks full-time programme. Further details include 120 credits at Level 5, compulsory work placements, approx 30 hours study per week including 5-6 hours self-study, and a next intake on 7 July 2025 at the Royal Oak campus.
