Advanced design research skills
Extend knowledge and application of research methods in design through critical enquiry, advanced project work and context-specific methodologies.

Professional and sustainable design practice
Demonstrate understanding and application of professional, legislative, and sustainability frameworks relevant to design practice.

Project management and execution
Plan, develop, and deliver substantial design research projects, both individually and collaboratively, meeting professional and academic requirements.
What You're Signing Up For
This intensive postgraduate qualification allows students with an excellent undergraduate design background to broaden and deepen their knowledge of design research methods and professional design practice. Students undertake advanced research in a discipline of their choosing, such as fashion, communication, visual arts, product, or spatial design—or engage in multidisciplinary projects. The programme includes significant applied and research projects, is delivered in a studio-based, multi-disciplinary environment, and prepares graduates for further study or leadership roles in the creative industries.
Course Content
- Professional Design Context: Understanding professional design practices, conventions, and frameworks; exploring sustainable design from cultural, social, environmental, and economic perspectives.
- Design Research Methods: Exploring research methods and methodologies; understanding research contexts in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally; developing literature/context/artefact reviews and research proposals.
- Applied Design Project 1: Individual or team-based applied project in chosen design discipline, including research, analysis, critique, and resolution with sustainability focus.
- Major Research Project 2: Advanced research/design-led project in student's discipline; public presentation of research; supported by a significant dissertation or equivalent writing.
What you need to know first
Bachelor of Design (discipline endorsed) Level 7 or equivalent degree, with overall grade of B+ or higher in final year Level 7 courses.
Portfolio of creative work relevant to proposed field of research.
Honours study to commence within 5 years of completing undergraduate degree (exceptions require approval).
International students individually assessed for readiness.
English: NZ University Entrance or IELTS overall 6.5 (no band lower than 6.0) or equivalent evidence.
