Core skills this course teaches

Develop visual communication skills
Graduates can communicate ideas and storytelling through a variety of still and moving image media, text, sound, and interactivity.

Master expertise in chosen design specialty
Graduates specialise over the degree in one or more areas such as graphic design, illustration, animation, UX/game design, film and photography, or web/media, with deep and practical skills.

Demonstrate creative problem-solving and design thinking
Students apply creative and critical thinking to develop innovative design solutions that are people-centred and socially/environmentally aware.
What You're Signing Up For
This three-year, Level 7 bachelor's degree teaches students how to communicate ideas visually across a range of still and moving media, including text, sound, and interactive content. Students gain practical experience through community and client-driven projects with an emphasis on positive social and environmental change. The first year provides broad-based foundational skills, after which students specialise in fields such as graphic design, animation, UX/game design, illustration, or web/media. Graduates develop strong creative, technical, and collaborative abilities, highlighted by project-based learning and a final portfolio. A game design pathway is available. Further study options and a wide array of career outcomes are possible.

What you need to know first
NCEA Level 3, including 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three university entrance subjects
10 literacy credits at Level 2 or above (5 reading, 5 writing)
10 numeracy credits at Level 1 or above (either achievement standards or three specific unit standards: 26623, 26626, 26627)
Or equivalent qualification/experience
Portfolio submission unless criteria for automatic entry or portfolio pre-approval are met
Applicants may be required to attend an interview
International students: must meet equivalent academic entry requirements
