What You're Signing Up For

The Introduction to Live Sound short course is designed to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in live sound production. Topics include working with PA systems, mixing desks, microphones, effects, sound theory, and the setup and operation of equipment typically used in small venues. Participants will gain hands-on experience and knowledge useful for entry-level roles in live sound or supporting live music and events.

  • Operation of FX units
  • Using compression
  • Introduction to mixing
  • Operation of larger PA systems
  • Fundamentals of sound theory and signal types
  • Equipment overview: speakers, microphones, mixing boards, amplifiers, crossovers
  • Equalisation, effects, compressors, gates
  • Gain structure
  • PA hook up and cabling techniques
  • Coiling leads and setting up microphones
  • Powered speakers: understanding and using
  • Advice on equipment purchasing and upgrading
  • Electrical systems safety
