Work unsupervised in specialist joinery areas
Graduates will be able to work independently in cabinetry, timber doors and windows, timber stairs, or laminate fabrication to the required trade standards.

Operate and maintain joinery machinery
Students will acquire competency in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting a wide range of joinery machines and equipment relevant to their chosen strand.

Apply codes of practice and industry standards
Learners will understand and implement industry codes, health and safety regulations, and quality standards in joinery production.
What You're Signing Up For
This 3-4 year apprenticeship-based certificate prepares students to work unsupervised as a joiner in various specialist strands. The programme is a mix of block courses at UCOL and practical experience in a workplace, covering machine operation, joinery manufacturing, defect remediation, customer service, literacy and numeracy for trades, and workplace safety. Optional units allow further specialisation. The qualification equips graduates for employment as certified joiners capable of advanced, unsupervised work in residential and commercial settings.

- Reading and interpreting plans/specifications
- Machinery setup and use (sanding, planning, saws, shaping, CNC, etc.)
- Workshop layout planning
- Manufacture and installation of cabinetry, doors, windows, stairs, laminate products (strand-dependent)
- Setting up and using fixed and moveable machinery
- Literacy and numeracy for trades
What you need to know first
Employed as an apprentice/trainee in the joinery industry
NCEA Level 2 or National Certificate in Employment Skills or equivalent knowledge and skills
Subject to the discretion of the Executive Dean for other cases
