What You're Signing Up For

The UCOL Academy Applied Construction Design programme introduces secondary students to the world of building and architectural design. With a focus on practical, hands-on learning, students develop foundational skills in construction methods, technical drawing, and building calculations. The programme prepares learners to explore further study pathways and entry-level roles in architectural drafting, quantity surveying, and design-related engineering.

Course Content

  • Introduction to construction subcontractors' work and main contractor's responsibilities (Unit Standard 13015)
  • Understanding and working with building drawings and specifications (Unit Standard 24362)
  • Creating and describing technical drawings for design and construction (Unit Standard 27159)
  • Performing building calculations (Unit Standard 24378)
  • Hands-on mini build project

What you need to know first

For Year 11 - 13 secondary school learners (NZ citizens, permanent residents or visa holders eligible to attend secondary school)

Applications must be received from a participating school

Recommended school subjects: Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Digital Technologies, Construction and Mechanical Technologies, English
