What You're Signing Up For
This is a four-year apprenticeship programme leading to the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4). The programme combines on-site learning under the supervision of a Licensed Building Practitioner with off-site block courses at Otago Polytechnic. You will learn practical carpentry skills, building techniques, and gain experience required for a career as a carpenter, foreman, supervisor, or project manager in the construction industry. Most learning is on the job, assessed by trade-qualified assessors through regular onsite visits.

- Use of the Otago Polytechnic apprentice app for assessment and work recording
- Preparation for roles such as carpenter, foreman, site manager, or construction supervisor
What you need to know first
You must be working in the construction industry as an employee or contractor.
Supervision by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) or suitable industry professional is required.
You must enter into a training agreement with your employer and Otago Polytechnic.
