Apply practical working knowledge of carpentry fundamentals
Understand and use tools, materials, legislative and regulatory frameworks, drawings, specifications, and building methods relevant to the carpentry trade.

Establish and maintain construction sites
Plan and carry out all aspects of site establishment, including preparatory demolition and setting out buildings.

Construct building foundations and retaining walls
Competently construct framed and solid foundations as well as retaining walls for buildings.
What You're Signing Up For
The New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) apprenticeship from NorthTec supports people employed in the construction industry to gain a formal carpentry qualification. The programme integrates on-job experience, block courses, and workshop learning, preparing graduates to work independently as a carpenter and to supervise others, while meeting professional standards expected in the building sector.
Course Content
- Fundamentals of the carpentry trade (tools, equipment, materials)
- Building legislative framework and regulatory requirements
- Construction drawings and specifications
- Building types, construction methods, and building science
- Building mathematics and communication
- Site establishment, demolition, and set out for buildings
- Foundation and retaining wall construction
- Wall, roof, ceiling, column, post, beam, and portal construction
- Roof claddings, joinery, and wall claddings
- Insulation, linings, finishing trim, joinery, hardware, and sound control systems
- Professional standards and ongoing learning in the construction industry
- Competency and safety in commercial environments
What you need to know first
Be at least 16 years old at the time you commence the programme.
Be employed or contracted in the construction industry.
Be supervised by someone prepared to support your training.
Be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level.
Be physically able to complete the programme-specific outcomes.
Enter into a training agreement with employer and NorthTec.
If English is not a first language, provide IELTS Academic score of 5.5 (no band lower than 5.5) or equivalent.
