This programme is designed for learners seeking to gain foundational skills relevant to building, construction, and allied trades. It combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on projects, introducing health and safety, construction materials, use of power tools, interpreting plans, and working as part of a team. Students plan and complete building/construction projects under general supervision, gaining practical experience for a range of trade occupations.

  • Introduction to health and safety legislation and procedures
  • Overview of roles in allied trades
  • Timber and construction materials
  • Use of power tools and construction machinery
  • Project planning, drawings and sketching
  • Safe working procedures in a BCATS environment
  • Interpretation of construction plans and following instructions
  • Teamwork and communication in projects
  • Completion of two construction projects (including a group project)

What you need to know first

Domestic learners aged 16 and over.

Completion of New Zealand Certificate in Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (Level 1).

Interview required as part of the application process.
