What You're Signing Up For
This two-year, part-time diploma is designed for individuals already employed in the field of building control, aiming to become qualified as Building Control Officers, Surveyors, Inspectors, or Compliance Officers. The programme develops applied skills in building documentation analysis, building plan assessment, inspection processes, compliance evaluation, professional communication, and risk management within the New Zealand regulatory environment. Aligned to regulatory requirements and industry practice, it combines distance learning with in-employment experiential learning.
Course Content
- Analysis of building documentation for regulatory compliance
- Assessment of consent applications and building plans
- Residential and commercial building inspections (case studies, simulated and real inspections)
- Interpretation of construction plans and specifications
- Use of technical equipment for compliance inspections
- Application of administrative resources and technical information
- Professional and effective communication within the regulatory framework
- Risk management strategies and decision making under the Building Act
- Application of ethical, social, and cultural practices
- Workplace-based learning and observational assessment
What you need to know first
Minimum of 50 NCEA credits at Level 2 or above, including 12 English/related credits at Level 2 and 10 Numeracy credits at Level 1, or equivalent knowledge/skills
Trades qualification at Level 3 or above (English as instruction language) or New Zealand Certificate in Building Regulatory Environment (Level 4)
Special admission: Age 20+ with evidence of relevant aptitude/experience via interview or referee checks
In-employment admission: Must be employed in a technical building control role; employer evidence required for supervision, duties, and hours (minimum 1076 relevant work hours over 2 years).
Provisional admission possible for under 20s with evidence of educational attainment or work/life experience at the discretion of the academic director
