What You're Signing Up For

This pre-employment programme provides you with practical and theoretical knowledge in construction trade skills, focusing on carpentry. You will learn in modern facilities, engage in real-world project and task-based learning, and gain credits towards the NZ Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4). Work experience with local industry partners is included. The programme offers a solid foundation for entering an apprenticeship or a career in the construction sector.

  • Reading and using specifications and drawings for introductory projects
  • Introductory applied calculations for construction tasks
  • Introduction to carpentry terminology and concepts
  • Selecting and using building technology, materials, fixings, and hardware
  • Construction and installation processes and techniques
  • Introductory carpentry project work in a practical environment
  • Work experience with industry partners (Hawke’s Bay Homes, K3 Kahungunu Property)

What you need to know first

Applicants under 20: NCEA Level 1 (including Maths and English) or equivalent.

Alternatively, successful completion of the NZ Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills (Level 3) and academic entry test, or successful interview and entry test.

Physical mobility suitable for construction site work.
