What You're Signing Up For
The New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology (Level 5) programme offered by Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is designed for individuals with basic computer knowledge seeking to advance their IT skills. Spanning 17 teaching weeks plus a 2-week study break, this full-time certificate qualification equips students with practical skills in IT communication, computer systems architecture, systems design, and introductory software development. Upon completion, graduates are prepared for Tier 1 IT support roles and have clear pathways to further study including diplomas in web development or technical IT support, and entry into the Bachelor of Information Technology. The programme includes four compulsory courses that align with diploma and bachelor level subjects to facilitate progression.
Course Content
- Communication for IT: interpersonal, written, and professional communication skills for IT contexts.
- Computer Systems Architecture: principles and operation of hardware/software, PC construction, troubleshooting, basic networking protocols.
- Design and Develop Concepts: IT business operations, development lifecycles, information management, user experience and interface design.
- Introduction to Software Development: software design and development processes, programming languages, data types, and methodologies.
