Gain foundational barbering skills
You will develop the core practical skills needed for work in the barbering industry, including hair cutting, tool and equipment handling, and application of finishing products.

Understand industry context
You will learn about the professional barbering environment, including the factors influencing the industry and its development over time.

Prepare for further study or work
You will be better prepared for entry-level positions in barbering, or for future study and credentialing in hairdressing or barbering.

Are you passionate about styling hair? The UCOL Academy Barbering programme will provide you with the opportunity to learn more about the rewarding, exciting barbering industry. Gain hands-on experience in UCOL training salons, learning to cut hair, use barbering tools and equipment, apply finishing products, and understand the working environment and influences that shaped barbering. The course is designed as a pathway for secondary school learners toward a career in barbering.
Course Content
- Hands-on experience in training salons
- Cutting skills and use of barbering tools
- Application of finishing products
- Understanding the barbering work environment
- History and development of barbering
- Knowledge of skin and hair for barbering
- Applying initial barbering techniques
- Unit Standard 10645: Describe the development of barbering (3 Credits, Level 3)
- Unit Standard 31946: Demonstrate knowledge of skin and hair for barbering (5 Credits, Level 3)
- Unit Standard 10646: Apply initial barbering techniques (20 Credits, Level 2)
What you need to know first
For year 11 - 13 secondary school learners (NZ Citizens, permanent residents or learners with an applicable visa allowing them to be enrolled in a secondary school).
Applications are to be received from participating schools.
Recommended school subjects: Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Education, Biology, English.
