  • Professional identity and salon professionalism
  • Salon workflow, operations and reception duties
  • Consultations and hair/scalp analysis
  • Shampooing, conditioning, treatments, and colour removal
  • Home haircare product recommendations
  • Hair styling tasks: techniques and tools
  • Using and maintaining cutting tools; basic cutting techniques
  • Assisting and undertaking a range of colouring services and chemical processes
  • Hygiene, presentation, health, safety, and environmental requirements

What you need to know first

10 credits at NCEA Level 1 in both literacy and numeracy

Minimum three years of secondary education

Preferred: Science, Maths, English, Art subjects; good communication/customer service skills

Applicants over 20 considered based on ability to succeed
