What You're Signing Up For

The Graduate Diploma in Designed Environments (GDipDE) is a 120-point graduate qualification at Victoria University of Wellington. It lets students study a new area of designed environments, deepen previous study, prepare for a Master’s, or gain up-to-date industry knowledge. The GDipDE can be completed in two trimesters full-time or four trimesters part-time, involving undergraduate courses from 200 to 400 level, tailored to students’ background and goals. It offers pathways for graduates wishing to transition between architectural specialisations, and is a stepping stone to Master’s study. The course is open to students with relevant Bachelor’s degrees or equivalent professional experience.

Course Content

  • Architecture: design theory and practice, historical and environmental considerations, material use, technologies, and design systems.
  • Architecture History and Theory: exploration of historical, social, and political aspects of architecture.
  • Interior Architecture: design of interior spaces, communication of architectural ideas, career preparation for furniture and exhibition design.
  • Landscape Architecture: design of outdoor spaces, environmental stewardship, planning for sustainable development.
  • Course work includes selected courses at 200-400 level aligned to the student's background and future goals.

What you need to know first

Bachelor's degree in Architectural Studies (BAS), Building Science (BBSc), Design Innovation (BDI), or an equivalent qualification.

Equivalent practical, professional, or scholarly experience as assessed by the head of school.
