What You're Signing Up For

The Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) at the University of Auckland is New Zealand’s first undergraduate programme of its kind, offering a unique honours pathway for aspiring Medical Imaging Technologists (MITs). The programme provides hands-on clinical experiences in hospitals and private radiology, delivered by experienced medical imaging staff. Graduates are eligible to register with the New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB) and have strong prospects in public and private healthcare sectors. Coursework includes image acquisition, clinical placements, anatomy, pathology, patient care, and research methods leading to a final-year dissertation.

  • Radiographic positioning and image acquisition
  • Physical principles and technology of medical imaging
  • Image optimisation and evaluation
  • Patient care and safety
  • Sectional imaging anatomy and pathology
  • Professional and evidence-based practice
  • Specialised imaging (including CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine)
  • Clinical experience in simulation labs, hospitals, and private radiology
  • Final-year dissertation / research skills
  • Core health sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, population health, biochemistry, behavioural sciences)

What you need to know first

Completion of first year of BSc at University of Auckland (prescribed courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, plus General Education)

Alternatively, completion of Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) at University of Otago

Graduate entry for those with previous relevant tertiary study

Selection interview (Multiple Mini Interview - MMI)
