The New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) recognises the skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred support for individuals within the health and wellbeing sector. Graduates are prepared for employment in a range of contexts, including aged care, disability support, and health assistance. The programme develops transferable skills and knowledge valued across the sector, including practical health assistance skills, knowledge of legal and ethical frameworks, infection control, advocacy, and an understanding of various support needs.

Course Content

  • Recognising signs of vulnerability and abuse, and appropriate responses
  • Application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Understanding the ageing process and its impact
  • Physical disability and support needs
  • Risks, impacts, and minimisation of falls
  • Incontinence and effects on persons being supported
  • Infection control, emergency procedures, and reporting requirements
  • Professional and ethical behaviour, including Code of Conduct
  • Effects of dementia and support services
  • Advocacy and self-advocacy strategies
  • Community support services and resources
  • Understanding legislative frameworks (Health and Disability Services (Safety) Act 2001, Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, Privacy Act 1993)
  • Assistive equipment use and care
  • Support strategies for challenging behaviour
  • Responding to changes in health or functional status

What you need to know first

Must be 16 years or older.

Sufficient English language competence (assessed on enrolment).

Applicants interviewed to determine suitability.

Further restrictions may apply for TEC funded deliveries.
