Develop clinical competence
Students will gain over 2,400 hours of clinical practice, ensuring readiness for professional midwifery in a range of healthcare settings.

Become eligible for midwifery registration
Graduates will meet the requirements to register as a midwife with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand.

Apply theoretical and practical knowledge
Students will integrate foundational health sciences and advanced midwifery theory into evidence-based clinical practice.
What You're Signing Up For
The Bachelor of Health Science (Midwifery) at AUT equips students with the knowledge and skills to practise as competent and confident midwives. Over four years, students undertake a combination of classroom-based learning, live online sessions, and hands-on clinical practice, completing at least 2,400 hours of practical experience. Graduates are eligible to register with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand and work in a variety of maternity and childbirth-related roles.

What you need to know first
University Entrance or equivalent
Must meet Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act and Children’s Act 2014 requirements (including police clearance)
Valid driver’s license
Satisfactory references
Normally 18 credits at Level 3 in Biology or Chemistry
16 credits in one approved subject (including Art History, Classical Studies, Drama, English, Geography, Health Education, History, Media Studies, Social Studies, Te Reo Māori, Te Reo Rangatira)
If English is a second or other language, completed at least three years of NZ schooling or meet IELTS requirements
