What You're Signing Up For

The Graduate Diploma in Laboratory Technology at Ara Institute of Canterbury is a one-year, Level 7 programme designed for those with a science background who want to expand their knowledge and gain specific skills to work as laboratory technicians. The course combines theoretical learning with practical experience, including electives in microbiology, chemistry, food and environmental sciences, a mandatory research project, and work placement. It emphasizes laboratory quality management, reporting to international standards, and the development of critical thinking, teamwork, and time management. Graduates are well-prepared for diverse laboratory roles across health, food, animal, research, manufacturing, and environmental sectors.

What you need to know first

Bachelor's degree in science relevant to this qualification gained within the last five years OR recent relevant experience.

If you do not meet academic requirements, equivalent skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience may allow alternative entry.

English language proficiency: Overall IELTS 6.0 Academic with 6.5 Listening, 6.0 Reading, 6.0 Writing, 6.5 Speaking (or acceptable alternatives, see NZQA chart).
