At 16 I really wanted to be a doctor, finding out I hadn’t taken any of the subjects I’d needed to to get into medicine at university meant I wrote it off and went to study law. If I’d know that there were other pathways that still led to medicine, or known of the career options that were in a similar space but had different requirements - I would have made a different choice.

I knew I wanted to be an engineer, but growing up in Levin I was surrounded by people choosing trades. The peer pressure to just pick a trade like everyone else was strong. I had to go it alone, I was the only one doing advanced calculus at my school and I have to do it remotely. It would have been really great to connect with others in a similar space, or share these options with my friends so they could see they had more opportunities than they thought they did

I loved computers and I knew that was going to be my thing. In my mind the only way to get there was through a BSc, and that’s how I ended up having to study chemistry, and hating it. I didn’t even think to look for another pathway to get where I wanted to go, and that was back before there were computing bootcamps and so many other options. There’s more choice now, but you don’t know what you don’t know.

I went straight into studying medicine after high school, and it took me a year to realise it wasn’t what I wanted to do. So I made the logical switch to studying linguistics… While I have no regrets for the new subject I chose, I wish I’d known more about the different ways it was offered. The theoretical linguistics program I took at Otago was very different to the applied linguistics program at Victoria - if I’d had a platform like Nexties I would have gone for Victoria.

I was halfway through my first year of a Bachelor of Science before I found out that the career I was aiming for (Forensics) was only available in NZ by becoming a police officer. That threw me completely off the path I had mapped out for myself, as joining the police wasn’t the right fit for me. It was pure luck, and free ride into work, that helped me discover the web design course I ended up doing. If I’d had Nexties I would have loved to explore more options as it made me realise there were so many choices I didn’t even know about.

FAQ

What is Nexties and how is it different from a course directory?

Nexties isn’t just a list of courses. It’s a discovery platform built to help you understand yourself, explore new possibilities, and make decisions that feel right.Unlike traditional directories, Nexties is centred around your journey, who you are, what excites you, and where you might thrive. It’s designed to help you take ownership of your future, not just pick a path from a list.

How does the discovery experience actually work?

You’ll start by exploring your interests, strengths, and motivations. Based on your inputs, Nexties will help surface learning opportunities and career directions that feel aligned.

You’re encouraged to try things out, through tasters, short courses, or just seeing what sparks your curiosity, so you can build clarity as you go. It’s a journey of reflection and experimentation, not pressure.

Is this only for students who know what they want?

Not at all. Nexties was built especially for people who don’t have it all figured out. Whether you have a goal or you’re just getting started, the platform adapts to where you are. You don’t need a fixed destination to begin, just a willingness to explore.

What kinds of courses and providers can I find?

Nexties includes access to around 90% of accredited diploma, degree, short course, and micro-credential programs across Australia and New Zealand. That includes universities, polytechnics, bootcamps, and innovative education providers. You’ll see both familiar and surprising options, tailored to reflect your own profile and priorities.

How do short courses and tasters help me make better decisions?

Trying something before committing is one of the most effective ways to figure out what’s right for you. Nexties makes it easy to test ideas, experience different subjects, and get a feel for what study and future work could be like, without long-term pressure or cost. These smaller steps help you make bigger decisions with more confidence.
