What You're Signing Up For

The Sport Coaching STAR course is designed for NZ secondary students and provides foundational skills and knowledge directly relevant to further training and study in the sport and fitness sector. The program covers foundational sport coaching, injury prevention, nutrition and wellness for athletes, and the responsibilities of a beginner sports coach. Upon successful completion of all unit standards, students are awarded the New Zealand Certificate in Sport Coaching (Level 3) with a STAR designation.

Course Content

  • Demonstrate knowledge of injuries, injury prevention and risks and hazards associated with sport or recreation (US20673)
  • Train to develop conditioning for a selected sport at a basic level (US20811)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of individual and group characteristics and needs for coaching participants in sport (US25805)
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of anatomical structures and physiological responses to exercise (US30447)
  • Provide support to exercise participants on nutrition, health and wellness, and allied health to promote health outcomes (US30639)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pre-designed exercise programmes, exercise principles, components and adherence (US30932)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the role and responsibilities of a coach, and of coaching beginner-level sport participants (US31675)
