What You're Signing Up For

The Café Skills (Level 2) programme by Wintec's Waikato Trades Academy is a 31-week, 1-day-per-week course designed to provide students with practical, highly transferable skills in hospitality. Students learn in commercial kitchens and restaurant settings, covering bakery, food safety, barista skills, table service, and non-alcoholic beverage preparation. Graduates earn an NCEA Level 2 qualification and important industry-required café skills for a hospitality career.

Course Content

  • Prepare and apply icings and glazes to bakery products
  • Practice food safety methods in a food business
  • Prepare and bake basic breads
  • Provide table service for a commercial hospitality establishment
  • Prepare and serve hot and cold non-alcoholic drinks
  • Prepare and clear areas for table service
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of commercial espresso coffee equipment

What you need to know first

Enrolment through your school – see your careers advisor.

For second-year entry: 80% of available credits in year one and 100% in chosen year two modules. Candidates not meeting criteria may be accepted at WTA discretion.
