What You're Signing Up For

Join the UCOL Academy Cafe Skills course to experience the fast-paced hospitality industry while still in secondary school. This Level 2 programme gives learners the opportunity to develop key technical and customer service skills for cafes, restaurants, bars, and catering, working towards NCEA Level 2 while gaining hands-on experience in food preparation, baking, barista practice, and front-of-house service.

  • Food safety methods in a food business (Unit Standard 167)
  • Baking food items (Unit Standard 13272)
  • Cafe counter service (Unit Standard 14441)
  • Commercial espresso coffee equipment and beverage preparation (Unit Standard 17285)
  • Preparing and presenting basic sandwiches (Unit Standard 13281)
  • Preparing and presenting salads (Unit Standard 13283)
  • Fruit and vegetable preparation in a commercial kitchen (Unit Standard 13280)
  • Customer service
  • Working in commercial kitchens

What you need to know first

Year 11–13 secondary school learner (NZ citizen/permanent resident or hold applicable visa allowing school enrolment)

Application through participating school, in partnership with parents/caregivers

Recommended school subjects: Home Economics, Technology, English
