What You're Signing Up For

Subject to NZQA approval. Graduates will be able to work safely and hygienically in kitchens, prepare and present basic meals, perform front of house and table service tasks, provide customer service based on manaaki kaupapa, and work effectively in teams. This qualification provides pathways to higher level certificates in Cookery and Food and Beverage Service. The programme is delivered online with regional support and optional workshops at multiple regional campuses. It is not open to international students.

Course Content

  • Work safely, effectively and hygienically in commercial kitchens or whārekai environments
  • Prepare, cook and present a basic range of kai using different cooking methods
  • Perform basic front of house tasks, table service and beverage services
  • Provide effective customer service from manaaki kaupapa
  • Work and problem solve effectively in teams (he rau ringa e oti ai)

What you need to know first

Be at least 16 years old at programme start

Able to understand, read, write and communicate in English at a basic level

Physically able to complete programme-specific outcomes

For non-native English speakers, IELTS 5.5 with no band below 5 or equivalent
