What You're Signing Up For
EIT offers a variety of hospitality-focused short courses designed to develop skills in barista coffee making, food safety compliance, culinary arts for youth, and preparation for licensing in alcohol service. These are practical, hands-on programmes delivered in various locations and are suitable for both newcomers and current staff. Each course targets essential skills demanded by the hospitality industry in New Zealand, from coffee technique and food hygiene to alcohol law and creative cooking for young students.
Course Content
- Barista courses: history of coffee, operating and maintaining espresso machines, practical coffee training, customer service fundamentals.
- Food Safety courses: food safety and hygiene, food-borne illness prevention, food control plans, compliance with council requirements, hand and personal hygiene, cleaning, allergies, contamination prevention.
- Junior Chef: creative dessert making, introductory culinary techniques, practical cookery for youth.
- LCQ (License Controllers Qualification): NZQA unit standards, Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, responsibilities of licensed premises, preparation for bar manager licensing.
What you need to know first
Barista: 16 years or older
LCQ: 18 years or older
Junior Chef: Secondary school student (with STAR/Gateway option for eligible students)
