What You're Signing Up For
The Equine STAR course at Telford, Southern Institute of Technology, is designed for NZ secondary school students interested in horse care and related practical knowledge. Students learn the basics of bringing a horse into and out of work, recognize poisonous plants, assess stables, and understand the anatomy and health indicators of horses.
Course Content
- Procedures for bringing a horse into work after a spell and letting down
- Knowledge of plants, grasses, and trees poisonous to horses
- Assessment of design, functionality, and construction of a stable complex
- Identification of the external anatomy of horses and signs of good/ill health and emergencies
- Description of features and internal structure of the hoof capsule of the horse
- Description of the anatomical structure of horse legs
- Identification and description of horses' body systems and common problems

Available only to NZ Secondary Schools via application by the school's nominated STAR / Gateway Co-ordinator.
