What You're Signing Up For

This STAR course is designed for New Zealand secondary school students and provides foundational knowledge in equine care. Students will learn about bringing horses into work, equine anatomy, stable complex design, common health issues, and the identification of common hazards. The course covers both theoretical and practical elements essential for supporting animal care and welfare in equine settings.

Course Content

  • Bringing a horse into work after a spell and letting down
  • Identifying plants, grasses, and trees which are potentially poisonous to horses
  • Assessing the design, functionality, and construction of a stable complex
  • Identifying external anatomy and signs of health and ill health in horses
  • Describing internal structure of the horse hoof capsule
  • Describing anatomical structure of horse legs
  • Identifying basic components, functions, and common problems of horses' body systems
