What You're Signing Up For

This STAR course, available exclusively to New Zealand secondary school students, provides practical knowledge and skills in cattle farming. Students will learn about rearing replacement cattle, managing calving and animal health, understanding cattle breeds and genetics, monitoring feed supply, and cattle records management. All units are designed to introduce students to key aspects of working with cattle in a farming environment.

Course Content

  • Describe rearing weaner or replacement cattle (Unit Standard 10082, Level 3, 4 credits)
  • Describe calving, diseases, and health disorders (Unit Standard 19075, Level 3, 3 credits)
  • Describe annual feed supply and demand, manage surpluses/deficits, perform calculations (Unit Standard 19081, Level 2, 4 credits)
  • Describe breeds and classes of cattle, identification, and records (Unit Standard 24623, Level 2, 2 credits)
  • Describe cattle genetics and selection (Unit Standard 24624, Level 3, 5 credits)
