What You're Signing Up For

The Animal Care STAR course offers units focused on handling, feeding, health care, housing, and welfare of various domestic animals, as well as foundational knowledge in animal anatomy and common zoonotic diseases. The course prepares students for introductory roles in animal care or further study in related fields. Assessments may involve observational or video evidence for most units. Course is only available to NZ secondary schools via application by their school's nominated STAR or Gateway coordinator.

  • US5148 Identify, handle, transport, and care for cats
  • US5152 Monitor health and provide husbandry for and handle horses
  • 5180 Describe companion animal anatomy, cells, body tissues and systems
  • US7337 Identify, handle, transport, and care for dogs
  • US19894 Describe zoonoses, notifiable exotic zoonoses, and their control, in New Zealand
  • US31501 Describe cat feeding, health, and housing, and carry out routine health procedures
  • US31502 Describe dog feeding, health, and housing, and carry out routine health procedures
  • US31504 Describe and apply the Animal Welfare Act 1999 to a work role in an animal facility
  • US32803 Describe rabbit feeding, health, housing, and routine health procedures
