What You're Signing Up For

Offered only via the STAR programme to secondary schools, the Agriculture General course provides foundational knowledge in agriculture, including animal anatomy, livestock health, animal behavior, weather and climate interpretation for primary industries, and soil management. The course is designed to introduce students to practical and theoretical aspects of agriculture in New Zealand's primary sector.

Course Content

  • Demonstrate knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology
  • Describe methods for maintaining on-farm livestock health and health problems of livestock
  • Demonstrate knowledge of livestock behaviour and welfare in a primary industry operation
  • Describe weather, climate and micro-climate characteristics, and interpret weather maps for a primary industry operation
  • Gather and record information from a rain gauge, thermometer, and barometer; or weather station
  • Demonstrate knowledge of soils and fertilisers
  • Describe soil properties and their effect on plant growth
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of an agriculture system on soils
  • Describe livestock reproductive processes and practices
  • Describe livestock selection for increased productivity
