What You're Signing Up For

The NextGen Dairy Farmers Programme provides Year 12 and 13 students a unique pathway from school into the dairy farming sector. Participants gain on-the-job experience, pre-employment farm training, and employment as trainee farm assistants, working with animals, machines, and technology. The programme is supported by industry experts and leading farmers, focuses on high standards in animal welfare and environmental stewardship, and is currently available only in Canterbury. It features a blend of training, mentoring, and real-world work experience to fast-track students into rewarding dairy farming roles.

Course Content

  • Three-week pre-employment training on a Canterbury dairy farm
  • Animal handling and working with dairy stock
  • Vehicle and machinery training (motorbikes, ATVs)
  • Milking systems and operation of the dairy shed
  • Health, safety, and well-being on the farm
  • On-the-job learning as a trainee farm assistant (paid work)
  • Mentoring and regular catch-ups with a learning advisor
  • Building social/professional rural networks

What you need to know first

Year 12 or 13 student

New Zealand citizen or resident

Interest in dairy farming and rural work

Available to sit final school exams (late 2025)
