Perform basic plumbing maintenance
Students will be able to perform supervised basic residential plumbing maintenance tasks.

Understand and apply safety legislation
Students will demonstrate knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and apply safe working practices in a building, construction, and allied trades (BCATS) environment.

Work safely in gas-contaminated environments
Learners will understand and demonstrate practices for safe working in environments contaminated by gas during plumbing, gasfitting, or drainlaying.
What You're Signing Up For
The UCOL Academy Introduction to Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying programme provides secondary school learners with the foundation skills required to get started in the busy plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying industries. Students develop practical skills and safety awareness and earn unit standard credits toward NCEA, helping them to explore a career in the trade and prepare for advanced studies or apprenticeships.
Course Content
- Basic residential plumbing maintenance under supervision (Unit Standard 25068)
- Health and safety legislation and safe working practices in a BCATS environment (Unit Standard 24354)
- Working in gas-contaminated environments (Unit Standard 21883)
- Selecting, describing, using, and maintaining tools for plumbing and drainlaying (Unit Standard 30557)
- Soft soldering of metal joints (Unit Standard 22139)
- Drawing and forming simple patterns for plumbing and gas-fitting sheet metal components (Unit Standard 25413)

Year 11-13 secondary school learners (NZ citizens, permanent residents or eligible student visa holders)
