What You're Signing Up For

The UCOL Academy Construction Programme lets secondary school learners gain practical skills and knowledge in construction while working towards NCEA Level 2 or 3. Students learn about key construction skills such as carpentry, joinery, use of tools, concrete work, and health and safety, all in dedicated trades workshops. This programme provides experience for learners considering a pathway into construction, carpentry, or related trades.

Course Content

  • Health and safety practices in construction environments
  • Basic carpentry and joinery skills
  • Use and maintenance of hand tools and power tools
  • Laying paving blocks
  • Minor concrete works
  • Communication and collaboration in building projects
  • Basic mathematical processes applied to building activities
  • Constructing timber framed utility buildings
  • Receiving instructions and communicating information regarding BCATS projects
  • Measuring and calculating for construction projects

What you need to know first

Currently enrolled as a secondary school student in Year 11-13 (NZ Citizens, permanent residents, or with an applicable student visa)

Domestic school nomination and partnership with parents/caregivers and school required

Recommended subjects: Maths, English, Technology, Computing
