What You're Signing Up For

This STAR course introduces secondary school students to carpentry by providing the opportunity to construct items such as bird feeders, benches, and cabinets in the same workshops used by SIT’s pre-trade students. Students learn basic construction techniques and health & safety practices in a supervised, practical environment. Steel-capped boots are required for participation. Enrolment is available only via application by the school's nominated STAR/Gateway Co-ordinator.

Course Content

  • Use of construction/joinery workshops alongside pre-trade students
  • Construction of timber garden furniture as BCATS projects
  • Building items such as bird feeders, benches, and cabinets
  • Completion of specified BCATS carpentry projects
  • Understanding and applying health and safety requirements (including use of steel-capped boots)
