What You're Signing Up For

This STAR Carpentry course offered by SIT allows secondary school students to experience real-life construction and joinery work in a professional workshop setting. Students participate in building practical items such as bird feeders, benches, and cabinets, gaining insight into the types of projects encountered by pre-trade and full-time carpentry students. The course emphasizes safe workshop practices, with a requirement for steel-capped boots, and provides an excellent introduction to further study or a career in construction trades.

Course Content

  • Construct timber garden furniture as a BCATS project (Unit Standard 12932, Level 2, 8 credits)
  • Complete a BCATS project (Unit Standard 31812, Level 2, 6 credits)
  • Workshop health and safety requirements including steel-capped boots
  • Building practical projects: bird feeders, benches, cabinets
  • Observing pre-trade student construction projects

Only available to New Zealand secondary school students via application by the school's nominated STAR/Gateway Coordinator
